"I recall that the people went about with pale and worried faces, and whispered warnings and prophecies which no one dared consciously repeat or acknowledge to himself that he had heard. A sense of monstrous guilt was upon the land, and out of the abysses between the stars swept chill currents that made men shiver in dark and lonely places."

– Excerpt from "Nyarlathotep" by H.P. Lovecraft

"Too many damn summer people, anyhow."
– Judd Whittaker, Reach native.

Overview
TheReach-Setting1.jpg

xxxxxThe city of Aleswich is the county seat of Dunlin’s Reach in Maine, one of the least populated states east of the Mississippi river. Dunlin’s Reach county comprises of two major towns and four villages, with the majority of the land taken up by forest. The county is tucked away between Washington and Hancock counties on the main coast, taking up 1287 square miles. The entire county of Dunlin’s Reach has a population of 52,129 residents, making it the 9th most populated county between Somerset and Knox. Most of these residents live in the city of Aleswich — the city of Aleswich is where the bulk of the county’s industry resides, with steel mills, lumber yards and multiple factories that produce a variety of goods imported throughout the United States and beyond.

xxxxxAleswich has a total population of 30,112; it is the fourth most populated city after Bangor and before South Portland. It has a sister city in the Netherlands. Aleswich rests on a peninsula, with most of the population pushed up towards the northern part of the city, while all of the commerce and industry sits in the southern districts. Directly south of Aleswich Harbor is Cresmire Island, upon which is the second largest city in the county: Dunlin’s Point. The slash of water between Cresmire Island and Aleswich Harbor is where the county gets its name; a "reach" in a geographical sense is a body of water separating two land masses.

xxxxxDunlin’s Point has a population of 15,423. In the summer months, this can nearly double. Most of Cresmire Island is taken up by Dunlin’s Point, the forestry cleared away to make room for prime real estate and businesses devoted towards tourism. Two museums dedicated to the Revolutionary War are in Dunlin’s Point, as well as an amusement park, two beachfront resorts, a boardwalk filled with random shops and even a tiny village on the southern tip of Cresmire Island which acts as a “living museum” of sorts, where people can walk through what a traditional New England town would be like in the seventeenth century. The median average sales price of a home in Dunlin’s Point is around $365,000, which is a far cry from its northern cousin. Homes in Aleswich are often fifty to sixty thousand dollars, with prices dropping further than that the closer the property is to the industrial districts.
