I can alter my environment at will and make an incredible din all the while!”
– Calvin & Hobbes

Overview

xxxxxBack in Aleswich for about a year now, Venn's still crashing with his cousin Amelia, but at least he has a job now even if it is part-time. When he's seen around town, it's often at a coffee place, the library, used bookstores, hardware stores, the odd party hangout or music scene, running around attempting this crazy parkour thing, and just... walking. He's quick with the camera, too.

RP Hooks
  • Class of 2010 - Venn may have left town after that accident in his junior year, but he's a local boy.
  • Parkers - He's part of that $$$$ family... but they're "New Money" blow-ins and he's the adopted one.
  • Plants - His dad, Rafe Reyes, owns a local nursery. Venn used to help out there, before he left town.
  • Church - His dad's also Roman Catholic. One of Venn's mixed-media pieces still decorates a Sunday School classroom. It's kind of weird, in a good way.
  • Junk - He keeps picking things up, some of which should have been trash.
  • Flow - He works there part-time.

Do you...

  • Cut hair? Dye hair? He keeps meaning to get back the blue streak above his ear.
  • Rent rooms?
  • Sell used tools?
  • Hire students? Not that he's hunting for a second job right now, but he's got some part-time hours to spare.
  • Teach?
  • What about guitar lessons?

Background

xxxxx1995: Emily Parker, a probability theorist and one of those Parkers, traveled to New York City on what was supposed to be a week-long trip and wound up... longer. She did bring her husband back a souvenir, though: a scrawny toddler who, she told the Aleswich pediatrician, was three years old. The adoption paperwork bore it out, and young Venn wasn't telling them anything different. Of course, he wasn't talking at all.

xxxxxTherapy, patience, and the time he spent in his father Rafe's nursery (playing Legos in the pint-sized jungle), probably helped. Though Venn remained an only child, his early years seemed normal enough, complete to family dinners and vacations with the Parker clan; even patriarch Jonathan was remotely approving.

xxxxx2006: When Venn was fourteen, his mother died and Rafe cut off access to the Parkers. Venn, intelligent enough but never a devout student outside of his areas of interest, rebelled in all the stereotypical ways: spiked his hair, dropped his band geek friends, went for loud angsty music (of half a dozen genres), and sneaked around more than was good for him. He did keep his tools, but used them less for scientific gadgetry and more for putting together disparate things that 'spoke to him': 'found art' that his father just didn't understand. Smoking up his allowance came later.

xxxxx2009: Following an accident on the Thompson Island bridge in his junior year, Venn dropped out of sight... though a new patient was admitted to a very private Massachusetts sanatorium.

xxxxx2011: Cousin Amelia broke him out. He's been hanging out with her (Ross took over his old place on the couch, and then the bottom bunk, but now he's gone), doing some research, MST3King, and making stuff; he did odd seasonal jobs before Christmas, but hasn't settled down to school or a real job.

xxxxx2012: Leaving town with family (from late February to late March) probably didn't help with the whole job-hunting thing, and since he's been back, Venn's been... house-hunting? Maybe he even will join that town watch thing. It could happen. In early summer, he did finally get a part-time job, at Flow, but there's still no college in sight.

Connections
  • Amelia: cousin. Possessor of couch, freer of Venn. She's running a dating service? / ... / Like I can come up with words enough for you.
  • Aria: cousin. The Parkers' Great White Hope, or she used to be. / Put Venn in the asylum. Plays scary head games. Talks about what nobody else wants to. / The one thing about you? You actually do shit.
  • Claudia: cousin. Maybe she'll settle someday; Venn's not holding his breath. / The TK queen... who makes Venn try yoga. / You went over to him?! What the hell were you thinking?! / Supposedly back on our side.
  • Ross: cousin. He used to be Venn's best buddy. What's he like now? / Something's off with you, and I'm waiting for you to say what. In the meantime, the girls don't outnumber us quite so much. / You'd have let her die.
  • Yvette: she was their friend too. / Fly-by-night. What's in her head? / It's so weird, counting on you. Thanks for... driving. Yeah. / Will it be a green house? A greenhouse?
  • Lucas: Ross's 'friend.' / He's alright, all right. / The worst part is... never mind. So keep on with the fucking off, already. / Not-so-secret text buddy.
  • Devlin: He runs Flow. He's Venn's boss. He's the reason that Venn sells popcorn, among other things.

Ladytron - Destroy Everything You Touch

Elastica - Car Song

You could call me a car lover
'Cause I love it in a motor
I love the way it feels
To ride around on new wheels

Modest Mouse - The Good Times Are Killing Me

Got dirt, got air, got water and I know you can carry on.
The good times are killing me.
Enough hair of the dog to make myself an entire rug.
The good times are killing me.

Alan Jackson - That'd Be Alright

If I could keep the wind in my sails,
Keep ahold of the tiger by the tail;
A half a ham sandwich in my lunch pail:
That'd be alright.
